As part of their ongoing efforts to promote education, JAY-Z and Beyoncé handed out their latest life-changing scholarship on Wednesday night (Sept. 19) to Arizona teen Mikayla Lowry. According to ABC 15, Lowry was at the couple’s OTR II tour date in Glendale, Arizona, when DJ Khaled announced from the stage that she had something special for the student with a 3.7 GPA and an interest in marine biology.
“They said my name and I was like, ‘WHAT?’,” Lowry said after the show at State Farm Stadium about the $100,000 college scholarship. “It just felt unreal.” Lowry will be the first person in her family to attend college thanks to the scholarship from the Shawn Carter Foundation and the BeyGOOD Initiative, which have handed out more than $1 million in scholarships in 11 cities on previous OTR II dates this year to high-achieving high school students with financial needs.
The senior at Trevor Browne High School was one of 19 Boys & Girls Club of Metro Phoenix who attended the show for free.
This past Friday A$AP Rocky celebrated the release of his first Under Armour sneaker, the SRLo. While at the “skate rave” in Harlem, HighSnobiety had the opportunity to chop it up with the man himself to learn a bit more about the collaboration.
A$AP Rocky’s Under Armour SRLo has been criticized as being a ripoff of the Osiris D3, even though Osiris D3 designer and skater Dave Mayhew worked with Rocky on the design. And while the rapper/designer doesn’t skate, he grew up immersed in the culture, specifically seeing the D3 being worn around his neighborhood. At the core, A$AP wants to make skate-rave culture more relevant throughout Harlem and have the likes of Migos, among others, rocking his chunky sneaker design.
Friday’s initial release of the UA SRLo was limited to 500 pairs, but you can expect the sneaker to land online in the coming weeks. The AWGE event was a celebration of all things skate and rave, as attendees took advantage of a skate park, dance floor, artwork installations, a retail space, and plenty of performances.
Indonesian pop star Agnez Mo’s video for her Chris Brown-assisted single, “Overdose,” has finally arrived. Following the success of her 2017 project, X, Mo first teased the video back in June when she dropped a short video clip with Brown that fueled rumors about a romance between the two.
The full video for “Overdose” amplifies the sexually-charged feel of the preview clip as Mo and Brown embrace on the beach. Building the synth-driven single around a “love is a drug” metaphor, Brown sings, “I took too much of your love, I overdose/Girl, your sex is a drug,” before Mo delivers a lovesick verse of her own.
This continues a collaborative streak between the pair. After appearing in the studio together on multiple occasions, Mo previously lent vocals to Brown’s Heartbreak on a Full Moon: Cuffing Season – 12 Days of Christmas track “On Purpose.” The song arrives via 300 Entertainment following Mo’s recent signing to the label in April. “I’ve always believed that the magic in art is in the soul: the love and passion,” she told Billboard at the time. “Which is why it’s important for me to have a team that believes in me and my ‘art’ as much as I do.”
